Today, I received a message from someone representing a professional body who thought my band was great and wanted to invite us to perform at their event. They only invite local artists because they want to do their bit to help us gain exposure among the masses. Considering how expensive everything is getting, Im not surprised that this person might not have known that there are Singaporeans who (try to) make a living out of performing and writing music. Because my fellow musicians are working hard to help us (Singapore Musicians Guild and SG Muso come to mind), I thought to share this, not to incite other artists to brandish their (cheap China made back up) bows and sticks and demand blood, but because it made me realise how much there still is for us to do to help ourselves. So once again dear friends, if you want to support your mee pok seller you will buy a bowl of mee pok to eat and not ask for a free bowl of mee pok right? Please help us (nicely) spread the message that this theory applies to musicians too! I too am guilty of asking for discounts for my own gain without consideration for the other partys livelihood. But one little gesture at a time and we will get there! Oh, and if you were wondering, I told this person in the nicest way I knew how that this is what we do to make ends meet, quoted our usual rates and thanked this person heartily for the support and encouragement. I do hope we get this gig. :)
