Today, I shared in the grievances of tens of thousands of my fellow citizens, through rain and sun. I felt the despair, the anguish , and disappointments. 17 years since the handover, many important issues concerning the livelihoods of our people remain unresolved. Years of inaction, poor planning and execution of policy initiatives, and overly cosy relationships between government and businesses have left HK now standing at a crossroads, perched on a delicate and precarious point in history. It is easy to characterize the people on the street today as un patriotic, as rioters, as disrupting the harmony of our society. But I think that is an easy and wrong way to label tens of thousands of HKers. I have so much faith in our people. I have faith that HKers would not recklessly put themselves in this position. Unless they felt that their way of life, their values, their community was being compromised. Unless they felt that those in power were no longer able to serve the public interest. We are a pragmatic people, but will not hesitate to stand up for what is right and to fight for our beliefs. Please, for the sake of Hong Kong , I urge the government and various leaders in the community to lead by example : put down your differences, end infighting and factionalism, and come together to find consensus. Listen to the peoples voices, try harder to broker consensus, and strive for a better and progressive future. Try harder to restore balance and reason to the public dialogue. Do what it takes to bring real integrity and accountability to politically appointed officials. The framework of one country, two systems, isnt perfect. But you can still do your part to repair the broken contract between the people and the government before it is too late.
