Today I spent an hour in solitary confinement. Sorta. I had the unique opportunity to spend an hour in a replica of a solitary confinement cell (based on the dimensions, layout, etc. of an actual solitary confinement cell in a Wisconsin prison). Still reflecting on it, and Ill probably post some thoughts here over the next couple of days, but in the meantime, heres a video explaining the inspiration for the cell (which has been installed on our State Capitol grounds, and is currently “on tour”, spending a week at a time in various churches.) I’m so grateful for the experience, and for the opportunity to meet and speak with Chaplain Kate Edwards (who you’ll see in the video) and Rev. Jerry Hancock (who’d had his own “sentence” earlier in the day and who leads our church’s prison ministry). Im also grateful to First Congregational United Church of Christ - Madison, Wis. for hosting this cell for the last week and confronting and challenging me with a glimpse into something I never want to think about, but something in which I (as a citizen) am complicit.
