Today I took Jake to the Neurology and Spine Associates for his concussion appointment...finally! After waiting for 4O MINUTES after our appointment time we saw a physicians assistant who was excellent. We will have another appointment on November 4 with Dr. W, who is the one so many of you recommended. The difficulty that Jamie and I are having with this whole concussion thing is that Jake does NOT have any of the symptoms that we would associate with concussion...no headaches, no dizziness, no sensitivity to light..nothing! He got 100% on his science quiz last week and his math tutor (who has worked every week with him since last June) said he would never have known anything had happened to him if he hadnt been told what happened. If you look at the kid today you would NEVER guess that he was almost killed less than 4 weeks ago and spent two weeks in a hospital. So we have been wondering why people are saying its so bad! I figured we would go there today and the doctor would say that it was not, in fact, that bad. However, the doctor we saw today was NOT surprised that we were referred to them instead of being seen at Jeff Gordons. She was not surprised that he has not had headaches or dizziness or sensitivity to light. She said the hit his head took was very severe and although he doesnt show it, there was damage done...physically he can look perfect but mentally we need to treat him carefully. She suggested that he not take more than one quiz per day, have extended time for any work and continue half days at school until we meet again at the follow up appointment. At that time they will determine when he can go back to full time school. He, of course, cannot play contact sports, however she did NOT say that he would have to take a whole year off from lacrosse. They said that as a worst-case scenario at the hospital and thats what Jake has been told, but today she said that we would have to take it appointment by appointment. It may be a year, it may be less depending on how he progresses. He still does not remember anything about the accident or even up to a week after it. He lost a week of his life that I hope he does not EVER remember. However, his regular memory is back to normal! So, like I said before, he is done with speech therapy. He attended PT yesterday and did great...still working on balance and strength and will continue to do so for several more weeks. The broken jaw is continuing to heal. Hes on a diet of softer foods, but other than that hes eating normally. He gained back all of the 7 lbs he lost while in the hospital. The office we went to this morning was right near Levine Childrens Hospital. I wish we had time to go back to the 4th floor to give everyone a hug and say thanks again for all they did...we will definitely have to visit sometime soon...I know they needed a new remote for their Xbox system that they have for patients to use. Maybe we will go drop one off for them. =) Well, thats about it for now!
