Today I was contacted by the Department of Citizen Intimidation. Im working on a family estate that has a property with an unfinished pool with no fence around it. This officer has been contacting me for months since I was supposed to be the administrator at some point, but I was waiting on the legal paperwork to go through. The pool is a safety issue since parents arent responsible for their kids trespassing on the property from a legal standpoint. Now that I have administration, hes threatening citations, which would require me to drive to another state for court. I said that I have responsibilities here, and I cant just pick up and go to another state at any time. He proceeded to threaten me with a warrant. My initial response on the phone was to be defiant, but after getting off I was angry at his use of force against me. After cooling off a bit, I though about how easily this could have been resolved if using non-violent communication and some basic negotiation. But once he brought violence into the equation, the negotiation halted. I ended up calling back to tell him I didnt appreciate his intimidation tactics, but I could only leave it on a message. Alas, I submitted to his threats of violence by stating that I would attempt to work with my uncle to try and get this resolved remotely, but I could still not give any guarantee on the time frame. I did what I needed to ensure not being locked in a cage away form kids, but it still stings a little. In the past, Ive tried to judge each cop on a case by case basis, but Im not sure I can any more. This guy seemed really nice and cooperative until he saw the slightest hint of defiance.
