Today, I was contacted today by a reporter with The Independent, who wanted to ask me some questions about the disposition of the “missing money” at the Sheriff’s Office and what the County is doing and why. While I very much appreciate the “awareness” these newspaper articles create, I get frustrated that the media contacts me for answers, when truly….I don’t even understand what is happening and why. That’s my point of attending all the Board meetings I can and asking questions. It seems it’s difficult for some to understand why I even care, at this point. I was found innocent, yes. But, it wasnt as “simple” as that, for me to achieve that ruling. Literally, 2 years of my life was spent pouring over receipts, etc…. I had to try to “learn”, what I was never taught. And, I still don’t have a good grasp of the governmental functions required, but with the help of my attorney and the former office manager, I could disprove many dollars of the “missing money”. I was deciphering “altered” and inaccurate receipts. Altered, meaning being written on later, etc… after the evidence was left with the Sheriff’s Office, for over 9 months. It frustrates me that the assertiveness that was used to “charge” me, wasnt used to do the same as I spent 2 years doing…looking for accuracy, errors and the such. And now, that Ive been found innocent…it seems the “issue” doesnt want to be addressed anymore. Why? Why would the county board now (without most board members knowing a claim was filed with the insurance company), be asked to sign a “proof of loss” claim? The Auditors suggestions (in 2012) were; 1, file a claim with the insurance company or 2, get it from the Sheriff, personally. Now that the board has filed a claim and it seems all but $1000.00 will be paid (deductible), will they do as the Auditor suggested and collect the $1000.00 from the Sheriff? Those are the questions I have been asking. No, I don’t want to cost the county any more money. $7000.00+ for a trial is enough. I guess I have to accept “it is what it is” and walk away. I do know I tried VERY hard, to make the citizens of Merrick County aware of many issues, that had they been able to attend the trial (4 days), they would have seen for themselves. I believe many would be shocked. It is hard to understand, if you haven’t spent countless hours with these documents, nor, worked in the environment of the Sheriff’s office, to see the “other side”. So, with that…I again, thank God, the jurors who sat through the entire thing and understood, and my family and friends for the not stop, AWESOME support! I have done all I can, on this issue, I promise!
