Today I was driving into town and as I turned onto the road - TopicsExpress

Today I was driving into town and as I turned onto the road heading the back way into town I was greater by cars flashing their lights at me. I worried there was a bad accident or possibly that there was a problem on the bridge. I considered turning around because I was pushing it to be on time for an appointment I had, but there definitely wasnt time to head the long way back around and into town via the main road. As I came over a hill I saw a small backup of vehicles in both lanes and flashing lights in the intersection. It was a check point. While I have absolutely nothing to hide, I became angry at this increasingly common sight. I have been driving for nearly 20 years. I saw my first check point about 3 years ago. Since then Ive seen about a dozen. I live in rural America and I just cant understand why a check point would be on a back road at 10 in the morning. Im sure the State Police would probably cite safety concerns or something like that, but I think it is just a step towards a police state. I have many friends in law enforcement and I trust them with the lives and safety of my children. I cant think of a higher honor than that. I dont hold this against the majority of the men and women serving. I do worry that the people at the top have an agenda though. It is subtle and nefarious. If check points, curfews, illegal searches and seizures, and all the things you hear about in tyrannical police states went into effect overnight there would be revolution in the street. However, if you temper the waters by doing this occasionally and in small steps people will expect that this is normal. An entire generation will forget the rights and liberties their grandparents once took for granted. I know that this is likely to be missed or if read, many will think Im losing it. Thats fine. Consider for a moment that Im right. History shows that we are on a path from a republic to an empire. Rome was a republic not unlike our own. Two politicians and one general conspired to create a ruling triumvirate, that is an empire with 3 equal leaders. While the general was away fighting enemies abroad, the two politicians were allowing gangs, riots, and general turmoil in the heart of the republic. News of enemies foreign and domestic caused the populace to fear and willingly hand over their rights. As Caesar crossed the Rubicon with his victorious army the politicians realized they would not be part of the ruling triumvirate and instead would be subjects of an empire. Caesar entered the city and the people begged him to become emperor and to fix the problems in Rome using his army, just like he did in Gaul. We are one or two major terrorist events from begging someone to become an emperor in America. The three branches of government are too slow to act and react so we are mired in turmoil. We cant have decent health care, reasonable taxes, or even reasonable gas prices. There are riots in major cities and check points in tiny rural communities. It doesnt take much imagination to think that we will be pleading with anyone that has answers for our problems to just take control. Most of the population will be happy to give up liberties for some sense of safety and those who do not, well the prisons are over crowded but ashes dont take up much room in the landfill. Christians, Muslims, Jews ... those people are the reason we have war, riots, gangs, high gas prices ... Im probably over reacting. After all, it was just a minor inconvenience and at least Mussolini made the trains run on time.
