Today, I went to Kiguli Army Primary school. And the place was still awash with flowing conversation about the Songs of Kiguli/Qwela video launch. The whole school came out to great me like some conquering hero. Yet they are the heroes and sheroes. After the initial greetings, I went to the P7 class. And found it in a triumphant mood. And this was especially so with the three girls who accompanied me to Kampala for the launch. They were still basking in their experience. So I asked them to share it with the class. The three of them said variously that ‘cars were so many!’ We ate a lot of food’ ‘We didn’t eat Posho’ To which some kid asked them whether they ate using their hands. Since knives and forks are basically alien to them. This cracked the class up. Then their headmaster recalled what John Nagenda said in his speech when he said, “I noticed in the video that many of the children weren’t wearing any shoes….like certain tribal folk who never used to wear trousers. So their dangles were caught in the breeze constantly!” Or words to that effect….either way, when Nagenda said those words, the house was brought down. The kids went on to narrate how people in Kampala said ‘monee’ instead of ‘Money. How they, the kids, were able to order food from a big book (Menu). But they were rudely corrected by an envious class when they said, ‘....we then Climbed the vehicle...’. They praised John Nagenda for giving them money for their performance. And found the night’s MC, Nunu, tall and very beautiful....with a big wow! (Their words.) They also went to an amusement park, Wonder world, and rode on a ‘caterpillar. And two of them swam in their dresses...when not kneeling to every elder they encountered. But they were feted and toasted by those who knew them or knew of them….not bad for a debut in the city. I left them writing letters to pen pals in Florida. But before I left, I told them to write as who they are: raw and rustic. And they will have lifelong friends in the newfound pen pals.
