Today I went to Starbucks during my lunch break and bought a “Mocha Frappuccino with lite syrup”. I usually dont indulge myself with sweet, overpriced, coffee drinks but today I had a taste for it. The unusual craving put me at Starbucks at exactly the right time so that my path could cross with what quite possibly could have been an angel if not a direct message from God. After ordering my frappuccino and waiting what seemed like an unnecessarily long time for a relatively simple drink, I stepped toward the door to exit and head back to work when at the same time, a young boy about twelve walked up with a a woman that looked like she was in a bad mood. In an instant I thought, “What a grouch” and “She will be smiling when she gets her coffee”. I decided I would hold the door open for the both of them and do my part to be the nice part of this grouchy looking womans day. As the woman and the boy entered the woman passed right by and came to within a foot of me as I held the door. She did not look up nor did she thank me. She did not look back to see that the boy was behind her either. She just blew by as an entitled person that just expected doors to open as she walked through them. Before I had time to look away or consider her rudeness, The boy came into my view. His face was that of a down syndrome child and he smiled from ear to ear. I could not look away and the world seemed to slow down as he smiled as big a smile I had seen all day until that point at 2 pm. I smiled back at him and it felt so good I just wanted to give him a big ole hug. Then he spoke two ordinary words that should not have surprised me but they did. Through his smile he said very clearly “Thank you”. His smile was as genuine as his “thank you”. His innocence prevented him from hiding anything but his genuine thanks. This may not seem like much of an interaction and maybe some people might not have been as moved or thought much of the moment but I did. His slow motion smile and “Thank you” stayed with me the rest of the day and I was thankful that he crossed my path. This angel made me happy and peaceful the rest of the day and I hope he had the same affect on the grouchy lady that was with him.
