Today I would like to talk to you about some common Myths and Misconceptions. There are always at least one or two poor groups out there getting a bad rap. All pets have their ups and downs, their pros and cons- just like people. But to stereotype an entire group based on a few misconceptions is just plain irresponsible. While some ferret misconceptions are way out in left field, one or two have little merit.( I emphasize little because they are usually little things that are blown out of proportion and are attached to all ferrets. 1. FERRETS ARE RODENTS Get out of here. Ferrets are much cuter. Contrary to popular belief, not all small furry animals are rodents. Ferrets are relatives of polecats. Ferrets are carnivores. Most carnivores like to eat rodents. Most ferrets, however, are too busy sleeping of playing to care. 2. FERRETS ARE WILD, DANGEROUS ANIMALS Sure. And pigs can fly. Occasionally, ferrets get wild with excitement during playtime. And the most dangerous thing about them is that you may die of laughter just watching them be ferrets. Except in California(boo hiss), ferrets legally the definition of domestic: Theyre fond of home life and household affairs. ( I like that one- too bad they dont cook).Theyre tame and made fit for domestic life. Theyve adapted or been bred to live with and be of use to man.Ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years. they cant survive on their own and require human assistance. Like dog and cats( which have more bite incidents than ferrets ever will).all domesticates have their moments. They can have good days and bad days and need time outs. In most cases, a well treated ferret is a very, very loving and trusting ferret. 3. FERAL FERRETS WILL TAKE OVER the fear that escapees will form feral colonies and destroy native wildlife is basically unfounded and virtually impossible for several reasons. First of all, The majority of would be escapees are already neutered and spayed. Second, unless some little old lady is leaving piles of ferret food under the bush and the fuzzies actually get a chance to snarf it down before another animal steals it, Escapees usually die from starvation.another reason they wont take over is because there is no natural niche for them to fill in the wild. The domestic ferret let loose in North Americas wild would be low on the food chain and would be eaten and pooped out the other end before you could even say dook three times. 4.FERRETS ARE VICIOUS BITERS I wont kid you by saying ferrets never bite. They can bite for many reasons. As with kittens, biting and nipping in young ferrets is a normal part of playing. they can quickly be taught not to bite their humans. Like most domestic animals, in most instances, the more love you give, the more you receive. Ferrets Need daily handling and loving care. Even the toughest ferrets can be turned around with proper handling, time, and patience. 5.FERRETS POSE A SERIOUS RABIES RISK Ferrets are extremely resistant to the rabies virus, there has never been a documented case of a human getting rabies from a ferret.Scientific studies note that the amount of rabies virus found in the saliva of an infected ferret is negligible. Many states still get paranoid and automatically impose the off with its head sentence to a misunderstood biting or scratching ferret, some states have come out of the fog and issue quarantine sentences instead. HOORAY FOR THE SMART STATES. . 6.THE STINK WILL NEVER GO AWAY Descented ferrets can stay odorless for quit some time, but the skin glands produce a similar smell over time. Your ferret should be bathed as he approaches the borderline of tolerable stink (but no more than once a month). Because a poor diet can cause your ferret to smell a little more musky that a ferret on a high-protein,low -ash diet, make sure that you feed him a high quality diet. Basically, the stink of a ferret depends on your attentiveness as a ferret MOM of DAD. Like · · Share Like · · Share · Unfollow Post · about a minute ago
