Today Im thinking about emotion. Yesterday I finished a chapter in which the action never slowed down. My characters were constantly in motion, fighting the Big Bad, fighting each other. It moved fast, all the beats were there - but when I read it over I realized something was missing. That something was emotion. For me, not just as a writer but as a reader, too, what makes a book special are the characters. I need to care about the characters above all. In order to care about the characters, I need to know how they feel about whats happening. So today Im going back over my action scene and layering in emotion. Because I love these characters, and I want to get it right. So tell me, in the books youve read and loved, whats been the most important element? Characters? Setting or time period? Genre (mystery, romance, fantasy, etc.?) Plot? What?
