Today Im writing about the library of the Wizard Earl of Northumberland (1564-1632). At the time of his death his books were in fifty-two chests in a Long Gallery at Petworth (the precise form of these chests is open to debate). Besides the books there were also scientific instruments, perhaps including this, the Molyneux Globe. Emery Molyneux was a Lambeth instrument-maker. A handful of his globes, the first made in England, still survive - but this terrestrial globe seems to be the only survivor of the first batch, made in 1592.
