Article As Follows: North Korea Informed Japan of planned April missile launch North Korea told the Japanese government during bilateral talks in March of plans to conduct drills firing artillery and missiles on the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula sometime by April 17, a Japanese government source has told the Mainichi Shimbun. The missiles and artillery are apparently being fired to protest the U.S.-South Korean Foal Eagle military exercises under way in nearby waters until April 18. By telling the Japanese government about the test, North Korea was apparently looking to minimize the negative impact of its drills on Japan-North Korea talks. According to Japanese government sources, on March 31 -- the last day of talks -- North Korean officials mentioned unofficially that the country had already conducted an artillery-firing exercise in the Yellow Sea, near the Northern Limit Line to the west of the Korean Peninsula, and said the country plans drills firing artillery and missiles on the Sea of Japan side by April 17. They explained that the kind of missile they will launch has not been determined, and that diplomatic officials are requiring the military to use short-range missiles. North Korean officials also said that the range of two Nodong ballistic missiles the country launched into the Sea of Japan on March 26 had been limited, suggesting that North Korea had taken Japans position into consideration.
