Today Is September 10th, 2014 Time: 13:46 Hrs. PDT Status Update: HEADLINE: US To Send 100 Medical Workers For Ebola Outbreak The United States will send about 100 health workers to the 4 African countries hit by the Ebola outbreak. The US Agency for International Development said on Tuesday that it will dispatch 25 doctors, 45 nurses and other personnel to run facilities to stop the disease from spreading. The Defense Department will also provide Liberia with equipment for a 25-bed field hospital. The State Department said an American doctor infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone was sent back to the US on Tuesday for treatment. Four US citizens have contracted the virus. President Barack Obama said in an interview with NBC that if measures are not taken, the disease would spread beyond Africa, and could be a serious danger to the US as well. The World Health Organization says 2,296 people have died from confirmed or suspected Ebola infections. Meanwhile, the Tokyo metropolitan government will send 100,000 sets of protective gear to Ebola-hit countries. Officials say they will ship the first batch of 20,000 sets next week to Sierra Leone and Liberia, where the disease is spreading. They say the shipment will include clothing, gloves and goggles for medical workers. Officials say the Tokyo government had stockpiled the items to prepare for the possible outbreak of a new type of influenza. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made an emergency appeal last week for medical workers and supplies as well as 600 million dollars in aid.
