Today, July 2, would have been Sylvia Riveras 63rd birthday. Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002) was a Latina trans woman from New York City and an early pioneer of the queer and trans* liberation movements. She was a veteran of the Stonewall riots of 1969, and with her friend Marsha P. Pay It No Mind Johnson, she founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), one of the first organizations that served queer and trans* youth. In spite of the great systematic adversity with which she contended in the course of her activism, as well as frequent ostracization from the mainstream gay and lesbian movement that would not have been possible without her contributions, Sylvia remained a fierce advocate for queer people at the intersections of multiple oppressions throughout her entire life. Although she died of liver cancer in 2002, her legacy will live on forever.
