Today, June 13, 2014, Cookeville High School was evacuated due to a small, isolated fire on the stage in the school auditorium. Within minutes of the alarm, all students, faculty, and staff inside the facility were safely evacuated to the Wrestling building on campus. Students involved in summer programs were released to a parent or authorized guardian. The incident resulted in no personal injuries and minimal damage to a stage curtain in the auditorium that smoldered due to heat from stage lighting near the location of the curtain. As the curtain smoldered, the auditorium and adjacent areas were impacted by smoke triggering the fire alarm system. The flame retardant curtains prevented full combustion from occurring. Cookeville High School and Putnam County School System officials would like to thank local Emergency Management Officials for their timely response, the alert faculty and staff for their support during the event, and parents for their patience and full cooperation. All scheduled activities in the Cookeville High School facility will resume on Monday, June 16, 2014.
