Today, June 4, is the 40th anniversary of the Indians infamous 10 cent beer night at the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Heres a nice piece on it in which Michael Heaton, one of the best writers in Cleveland, interviews legendary Cleveland sports writer, sportscaster and storyteller Dan Coughlin about it. What a mess this became, and I think every Cleveland sports fan will agree. Were so embarrassed by it that weve even forgiven the first baseman on the opposing Texas Rangers that night for cold cocking one of the rowdy drunks who ran on to the field. Its not too much to say that the Rangers first baseman that night has even become a beloved figure in the Cleveland area. The Rangers first baseman on Ten Cent Beer Night was, of course, Mike Hargrove. My favorite story Coughlin tells involves a fan who was there that night, the late, great Tim Russert of Meet the Press (the last time that show was worth watching). Russert was a college student in the Cleveland area in 1974. Dont miss Russerts answer to the question Coughlin says he asked him. The question was, How many beers did you drink that night, Tim? cleveland/entertainment/index.ssf/2014/06/dan_coughlin_recalls_the_india.html#incart_most-read
