Today, Lisa, Jon, and myself went Legend Tripping in search of the very elusive melonhead folk of Fairfield County in CT. We started our trip by following a lead out of Oxford. The story goes something like this. i live in seymour ct and if your were to drive to the new oxford highschool up rt 188 from seymour just before the main entreance you will see a metal gate leading to a dirt road. If you jump and or open the gate after about a mile into the woods you will come to a small feild on either side of the road just past that you will find a few old broken down shacks with a small population of melon heads. It honestly looks like something out of the movie wrong turn and the people resemble those in the movie. I would be very careful though and bring some kind of protection seen how me and my friends were seen and had to hide in the woods for a couple of hours intill they stopped looking for us. If you think this is a lie or a made up story feel free to check it out yourself just be careful. Now, at face value, most people would scoff at the notion of another race of humans, fearful of society so they resort to living in the woods and sustaining themselves on the flesh of animals and somehow, humans. Me? I thought wow, what a chance to follow up on this. With no more information other than this claim to go by, we easily found the gate as described. Problem was, we walked through the woods on trails for about an hour and never found the fields nor buildings/shacks as mentioned. Also, the trails were well manicured and definitely had recent hiker/biker traffic through them. The high school was much closer than expected and in the near distance, you could hear the roar of passing vehicles on the highway. Yes, it was wooded BUT the big problem was that if a mutant race of humans were going to be anywhere, why in a place so close to civilization? Why in a place so ripe with regular human interaction? You could also see that there has been some clearing of foliage thus making it easier to see things at a further distance, making it so you couldnt hide for more than a brief second. There may be something in them there woods but in my opinion, this story is just that....a story. ----- We then proceeded to follow another story circulating the internet. That story goes a little something like this. I grew up in Trumbull and we always drove down that road Velvet drive it use to be a dirt road. When i was a senior at THS we took girls down there and shut off our lights to get the girls to scream. I remember seeing one home on this dirt road up on a hill and they would have two large torches burning all night long, that was freaky! That was going back 13 years ago, but now i have a close friend that lives in the affluent town of Easton, CT and to get there from Trumbull I can take Velvet drive as a shortcut (only in the daytime!) and most of the road has been paved, except for parts of the preserved marshland of Easton is still a dirt road. ... Oh and the freaky house still stands there on Dracula Drive! Using this story, we again easily found this location. Yes, it was heavily wooded (moreso than the first spot we went to) but alas, no melonheads. There was some old foundations and signs that signaled no trespassing due to the water authority but that was about all. The road itself didnt last too long nor inspired any sense of dread or fear into us. We drove down it with no music and windows down but nothing. Sigh. Such is the life of an investigator. If any location would be ripe for melonheads than this would definitely fit the bill. Lastly, we came upon another yet claimed melonhead road aka Saw Mill Road in Shelton. Velvet Drive and this road shared essentially the same characteristics. Long, windy, heavily wooded, dotted with a few houses, some newer....but no melonheads or any sign of them even being there. Major disappointment but in the end, not totally unexpected either. Are these melonheads real or simply an urban legend passed from era to era? With further exploration and research, who knows? For now, the jury here at NEST is out. Verdict to come in the future.... Stay tuned!
