Today: On September 18, 1947, the United States Air Force was established when the National Security Act went into effect, making it an independent branch of the military. Until that time, the Air Force was a branch of the Army called the Army Air Force. The great effect the Air Force had had during World War II prompted President Harry Truman to make it a partner of the Army and Navy, instead of a subsidiary. In this role, The U.S. Air Force has served the nation valiantly in Korea, Vietnam, both Gulf Wars, and Afghanistan, and today they maintain 5600 aircraft and employ over 400,000 personnel on active duty and reserves.
