Today-The Serengeti 1) The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai language and means an extended place. 2) This is an apt name considering it spans about 14,800 square kilometres which for those who know, is half the size of Lesotho 3) Its history started when part of it was protected in 1929. Since then it has grown and was accepted as part of a World Heritage Site in 1981. 4) It is home to one of the largest uninterrupted migration of animals in the world - almost 2million zebra and wildebeest who thunder across the plains to the fertile pickings of the Maasai Mara in Kenya. 6) The last packs of endangered wild dog disappeared in 1991. Then efforts were made to relocate packs and by the end of 2014, another 1000 dogs will find their home in the park.
