Today, Uniting Communities was among a number of leading South Australian non-government organisations offering support and housing in the community for families with infants being held in offshore detention. This announcement follows reports this week of desperate mothers self-harming and attempting suicide on Christmas Island. We will approach the Department of Immigration on Friday morning - along with AnglicareSA, Baptist Care, Centacare, CareWorks SA & NT, Lutheran Community Care and The Salvation Army - to submit a proposal offering to house and support detained families with infants who have been born in Australia. This would allow asylum seekers to live in the South Australian community while their claims are processed.
