Today a soldier of mine showed me where he was shot in the elbow while serving in Afghanistan. Because he already had two Purple Hearts, he told the medic to take out the bullet and sew up the wound without reporting it- preventing him from receiving a third Purple Heart (and a mandatory trip home) and thus allowing him to continue the deployment with his fellow soldiers. I might complain sometimes about my job... but it is never lost on me that it is a tremendous privilege to work every day with some of the greatest people that our country has to offer.
