Today at the Allotments the combination of the hot and the wet had - TopicsExpress

Today at the Allotments the combination of the hot and the wet had devastated lots of the raspberries and the blackberries, but had helped the courgettes and the runner beans - lots more lovely runner beans to come if the frosts hold off, as they still have masses of flowers. The Borlotti Beans are doing really well, some pods already going tan and purple from red and green, so they have been picked. Such a fantastic bean, the Borlotti, the only thing about it that Id change is that it would be amazing if it could keep its lovely colours when it dries and when it cooks! Best year yet for results growing cabbages, and the Brussels Sprouts and the PSB are almost tree-like - if they crop as well as they have grown we will have a wonderful harvest, which is just as well when they are close to a year from sowing to eating. Some of the PSB and the Red Russian Kale have suffered from the Cabbage White caterpillars, especially where I had to remove the mesh covers to try and deal with aphid infestation (washing up liquid spray, seems to have helped), but from past experience I know that the otherwise well established and healthy plants will just grow new leaves and it wont really hurt them, just delay harvest a bit - which when I look at the 5 monsters pushing at the mesh tunnels may not be a bad thing.
