Today at work a woman sitting at the bar mentioned (somewhat haughtily) to the people she was talking to that she was reading Atlas Shrugged and really enjoying it. I was unable to stop the words that exploded from my mouth, which were of course Good LORD that book is such a bunch of bullshit. I cringed and immediately apologized for expressing my opinion so forcefully, which she ignored, and instead asked me, Have you actually READ Atlas Shrugged? I replied that indeed I had, to which she replied Not the actual book though right? You read the Cliff Notes. This took me aback. My immediate (and admittedly poorly thought out) response was Darlin (though she was at least five or six years my senior) I went to college. Ive read Atlas shrugged. As a matter of fact Ive also read the Fountainhead and Anthem, and I can tell you that the stink of misogyny and capitalistic fetishism is rampant to the point of absurdity throughout all three. She looked at me blankly and responded by asking me my name for the first time in the hour plus she and her friend had been there. Her friend misheard me and thought that I had said my name was Buck, and they proceeded to call me Buck for the rest of their time there. To be clear? I actually enjoyed them a great deal. They had a great time and even being called Buck kinda made me grin. To many this might seem like a negative experience, or a reason to get their hackles up. To me it was just another day slangin beers. These ladies got to be surprised that the guy pouring their beers had a brain and then give the guy a little nickname. Shit like that cracks me up. As long as they tip. (I was to later find out she had only read a couple of chapters of Rands repulsive tome and was having difficulty getting through it. I read that piece of shit in a week.)
