Today commemorates the first sermon of Lord Buddha, called ‘the Sermon of the Turning of the Wheel of Dharma’ (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutra). Buddhists the world over celebrates it on the fourth day of the sixth month. In Bhutan this sacred day is known as Drukpa Tshezhi and is considered to be one of the most sacred days in our Buddhist calendar. After achieving enlightenment Buddha gave this sermon at Deer Park in Sarnath, India 10 kms from Varanasi (Benares). The sermon taught about the four noble truths (life is suffering, the cause of suffering is attachment, suffering can be eliminated and there is a path we can follow to end suffering). Today we are going to be conducting a puja for this special day and in the afternoon we will be doing a puja for all the sentient being especially the well being of all our supporters and the Phajoding monks. Recently, many obstacles have befallen the monks here such as illness, accidents and other problems so we are hoping to prevent further negative events from occurring by conducting a puja for this specific purpose. Saturday is also Bhutan’s second democratic elections and we will be praying for a peaceful and harmonious day, a day free from any tension, anger or conflict. namgay
