Today in 1649 His Royal Majesty King Charles I of England, - TopicsExpress

Today in 1649 His Royal Majesty King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland ( the Lords anointed on Earth ) was put to death by the Parliament and Commons of England The morning in London was cold and chilly and a frost had settled on the ground. Charles got up early saying I will get up, I have a great work to do this day. Work had been going on for 3 days to build the scaffold that would take the King and the execution party outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall. There was a strange feeling around London, it was full of Roundheads but there was no feeling of jubilation or excitement, the full realisation of what was about the happen had started to sink in. By 10am the King was led small room with the expectation that his death was just moments away however there was full panic going on by Cromwell and his henchmen as the one piece of legislation they had forgotten to pass was the position of Monarch, if a Monarch dies then as long as there is a living heir then the position of Monarch continues, thats why the cry is given The King is dead, Long live the King. Cromwell and his crew had to abolish the position of the Monarch and that stalled the execution. More about the actual events that took place on the scaffold later.
