Today in 1707 - England, Wales & Scotland form United Kingdom of Great Britain. In all fairness, England made most of the early running here. The Scots really continued to mutter about independence, and the Welsh pretty much did what they were told mainly because it was either that or get squashed. The two smaller kingdoms, however, did manage to get their own back in the end, with Scotland maintaining a firm grip on the ship-building industry, and the Wales becoming (and remaining) the cultural capital of the western world. It is a testament to the willingness of these great nations - however - to ultimately let bygones be bygones and embrace an exciting new future, which subsequently led to the United Kingdom maintaining its proud place as leader of the civilised world, and champion of everything worth championing. I am not at all biased. This is a statement of simple unadorned fact, which I appreciate may not be heartily embraced by our colonial cousins from across the oceans.
