Today in 1990 Whiplash released the album Insult to Injury Passaic, New Jersey Speed/Thrash Metal Status:Active Years active: 1984-1999, 2007-present Whiplash is an American thrash metal/speed metal band. They incorporate speed and New York style thrash into their music, with thrashing guitars, hooks, driven drumming and screaming fast lyrics. The band formed in summer 1984 when Tony Portaro and Tony Scaglione joined forces, recruited Tony Bono on bass and released their first CD, Power and Pain, in 1985 on Roadrunner Records. The debut CD was followed up by their first live performance at Ruthie’s in Berkley, Ca with Possessed and Death Angel. Scaglione left the band for a short tour with Slayer and recommended the heavy hitting Joe Cangelosi to replace him and he became a full-time member in 1986. The band proceeded to record the follow up CD called Ticket To Mayhem via Roadrunner Records in October 1987. They enlisted Glenn Hansen to take over the lead vocal position, allowing Portaro the freedom to focus strictly on guitar. With this line-up they released their third album Insult To Injury in 1990. The release marked a notable change in the bands sound, from raw, aggressive thrash to technical melodic thrash, with Hansens clean high-pitched vocals being the most notable difference compared to Portaros aggressive growling vocals. They firstly went on extensive tours around Europe and America with many thrash artists of the time such as Artillery and Agent Steel. After this, and following the poor reception of Insult to Injury they split-up. The band reunited and released their fourth album Cult of One in 1996 via Massacre Records and changed their sound again completely to a more contemporary style, introducing keyboards and mid-tempo songs. The overall style is more reminiscent of a mix between post-Rust in Peace Megadeth, early Nevermore and Badmotorfinger era Soundgarden. The lineup featured new members Rob Gonzo on vocals (mid-range vocals), Warren Conditi on guitar and Jimmy Preziosa on bass. It also marked the return of original drummer Tony Scaglione. Their 1997 release Sit Stand Kneel Prey, saw guitarist Warren Conditi assume the lead vocalist position as well as guitar duties. The music continued from where Cult of One left. Both these albums did not receive much attention, nor did they satisfy old fans of the band. In response to this, the band reunited with its original Power and Pain line-up and released Thrashback in 1998 with guest musicians Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella on various tracks on the album. This is considered by old fans the true reunion of the band. However, poor sales once again and the mixed reactions of the album put the band on hold. In 2002 Tony Bono passed away after a heart attack. However, the band reformed in early 2008 and the line up was yet again dramatically changed as Rich Day took over bass with the passing of Tony Bono, and Joe Cangelosi once again returned behind the kit after a long hiatus. In 2009 the trio released Unborn Again. Currently, the band is consisted of founder Tony Portaro on guitar and vocals, Dank Delong on bass and Dan Foord on drums and a tour is underway for 2011, where the band will play the entire Power and Pain album. It follows 1987s Ticket to Mayhem. It was six years before a largely changed line-up recorded a new album, Cult of One. This album saw the addition of a vocalist, Glenn Hansen, as Tony Portaro concentrated on guitar duties instead of the dual role he had performed on previous albums. It seems that the original album title may have been Rape of the Mind, as Tony Portaro says in a live performance video recorded at Copen youtube/watch?v=w-z5ggp7xpg
