Today in 1996, Evander Holyfield won the WBA heavyweight belt by TKO in 11 rounds over Mike Tyson. The bout had been previously scheduled for both 1990 and 1991, before Tyson lost to James Buster Douglas and then was sent to prison, respectively. Holyfield, initially a 25-to-1 underdog (closer to 7-to-1 or 6-to-1 by fight time), had a surprisingly easy time with Tyson, who had few answers for Holyfields skills inside, and jab from the outside. In round 6, Holyfields rough tactics paid off, as a headbutt caused a cut over Tysons eye before Tyson was dropped with a left hook in the same round. In the 10th, Holyfield staggered Tyson badly, before jumping right on him in the 11th. Not long into the round, Tyson was saved by the referee.
