Today in History: August 29: The last Inca King, Atahualpa, was murdered. The Inca Empire ceased at that time (1533); the self-regulating wagon brake was patented by Robert Turner (1828); the Factory Act, England’s child labor law, was passed (1833); the 1st motorcycle was patented by Gottieb Daimler (1885); chop suey was invented by the chef of Chinese Ambassador Li Hung-chang (1886); the Civil Right Act of 1957 was passed by Congress (1957); the Air Force Academy opened in Colorado Springs, CO (1958); the Beatles performed their last live appearance at Candlestick Park in San Francisco (1966); Hank Aaron became the 1st baseball player in the National League to drive 100 or more runs in each of 11 seasons (1971); the original “American Bandstand” studio, in Philadelphia, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places (1986); and the parliament of the U.S.S.R. suspended all activities of the Communist Party, ending its 75 year control of the Soviet Union (1991).
