Today in History: July 14: The French Revolution began, Bastille Day (1789); the Sedition Act went into effect which made it a federal crime to write, publish, or say false statements about the federal government (1798); the tape measure was patented by Alvin Fellows (1868); Robert Goddard patented liquid rocket fuel (1914); “Baby and Child Care” by Dr. Benjamin Spock was published (1946); the Molly Pitcher Handicap was the 1st sporting event to be broadcast in color. Color TVs were not widely used until the 1960s (1951), the 1st monument dedicated to an African American, George Washington Carver, was unveiled (1951); Mariner 4 flew by the planet Mars and sent back pictures to earth (1965); Hank Aaron hit his 500th career home run in Atlanta, Georgia (1968); the All-Star game was postponed due to a 33 day old baseball strike (1981); and iTunes reached 1.5 billion downloaded applications (2009).
