Today in History: March 24: A charter was granted to Roger Williams, in London, to colonize Rhode Island (1664); Benjamin West was the 1st American artist to be accepted to the Royal Academy of London (1792); blacks were given the right to vote in Quebec City, Lower Canada (1837); Professor Robert Koch announced the discovery of the tuberculosis germ (1882); ground was broken for the subway tunnel that would connect Manhattan and Brooklyn (1900); the 1st radio show to be broadcast from a moving train was heard on WABC in New York. It was a variety show hosted by Belle Baker (1932); “The Original Amateur Hour” was heard on the NBC radio network for the 1st time (1935); “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” opened on Broadway (1955); Elvis Presley reported to the draft board (1958); and the Exxon Valdez ran aground spilling 11.2 million gallons of oil (1989).
