Today in History: September 2: Phidippides of Athens ran 26 miles to Sparta to seek help against the invading Persian army. In his honor, the Olympic Games included the 26 mile marathon in 1896 (490 B.C.); the Great Fire of London started (1666); the U.S, Treasury Department was organized by an act of Congress (1789); the 1st issue of McCall’s magazine was published (1897); the 1st railroad car with fluorescent lighting started operation (1938); President Harry Truman declared this day as V-J day, Victory Day, the official ratification of the Japanese surrender to the Allies (1945); and The Concert for the Hall of Fame at Cleveland Municipal Stadium was a part of the grand opening ceremonies of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which was dedicated the day before (1995).
