Today in OSC History: On (o.s.) October 15, 1678, our first minister, Thomas Thacher, passed away following a sudden, fast illness. Thachers colleague, Samuel Willard, assumed sole leadership of Old South a mere nine months after starting. In 1702, Cotton Mather published a two-volume work, Magnalia Christi Americana, which included an elegy for Thacher: Though earth contains his dust, his name is yet immortal: It shall light the future ages oer the past it beamed: While his soul, set free from prison, seeks the ever-open portal Where the shining ones are waiting to welcome the redeemed.
