Today in Opera History: Mozarts timeless masterpiece Le nozze di Figaro debuted in Vienna in 1786. To commemorate the operas bicentennial, the The Metropolitan Opera in New York mounted for their 1985/86 season this production from Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, which was panned by critics for its dwarfing, colossal sets, but raved for its brilliant cast. Here are the incomparable sopranos Carol Vaness and Kathleen Battle as the Countess and Suzanna, respectively, singing the letter duet from a Met telecast taped in December of 1985 (but not aired until the following year). I love being at Vaness alma mater, as I know far too much from her friends and mentors about the backstage drama surrounding this production - drama that lead to a very unhappy ending for Ms. Battle....
