Today in Philippine History, October 6, 1896, Rizal was taken from Montjuich castle to a ship to sail back to Manila On October 6, 1896, Dr. Jose Rizal was taken from Montjuich castle (Castell de Montjuïc) in Montjuich, Barcelona, Spain, to sail back to the Philippines where Rizal faced trial and his eventual martyrdom. He was given a second class cabin and was held incommunicado in the ship Colon. This happened after Rizal had been arrested while on his way to Cuba, where he was volunteering for a medical mission. The Montjuic Castle is a fortress atop a hill in Montjuich , Barcelona, which many years ago served as a military prison. In Barcelona, the castle is particularly remembered as a site where important dissident-free thinkers were detained and executed. In order to highlight and honor freedom fighters and free thinkers who had a connection with the fortress, in April 2011, Rizal was honored with the inauguration of the “Sala José Rizal” room at the Montjuic Castle by the City of Barcelona.
