Today in Rock History, November 12, 2008: Mitch Mitchell, drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience died in his sleep of natural causes in his hotel room in Portland, OR. He was 61 years old. Mitchell auditioned for the drummer position with the Jimi Hendrix Experience and won the position on the flip of a coin over another drummer who would go on to drum for many bit name bands, Aynsley Dunbar. Highly praised examples of Mitchell’s collaboration with Hendrix include the songs Manic Depression, Stepping Stone, Little Miss Strange, Fire, Third Stone from the Sun, and Hendrixs signature Voodoo Child (Slight Return).
