Today in my physics lab one of the instructors, a male, was demonstrating our lab. I volunteered to help him, but he waved me off and said No, I need a man to do this. Granted I would have understood this statement if it required a lot of physical strength, but it was simply catching a light item as it rolled off the table. As one of the few women studying engineering, I am constantly fighting the gender stigma in science and technology fields. I was deeply shocked and hurt by this statement because he felt I was inadequate strictly because I am a female. I hope that girls who want to go into engineering or other science fields dont let comments like this deter them from pursuing their dreams. I, personally, will use this as motivation to continue my studies as an engineer, and enjoy everyday of it!
