Today in sections I did an activity with my students. The guys used their own birthdays, and most girls used the birthday of a brother or boyfriend. I read out the birthdays called in the 1969 Vietnam draft lottery and had them stand up if their date was called. It worked especially well in my second section, when I had two guys with birthdays in the first ten draft numbers. The looks on their faces were worth the fifteen minutes of class time, because in that moment, if only for that moment, they got it, and history became real for them. And thats what Ive been trying for all semester.
