Today, in the history of Rock and Roll, May 27th: 1958: The furor over Jerry Lee Lewis’ marriage to his 13-year old cousin Myra causes his U.K. tour to be canceled after only two shows. 1961: Johnny Cash guest stars on tonights The Deathly Quiet episode of NBC-TVs little-remembered Henry Fonda Western The Deputy. 1962: At the Grammy Awards in New York, Andy Williams Moon River, from the movie Breakfast at Tiffanys, is named both Record and Song of the Year. 1964: Eleven schoolboys are suspended from a grammar school in Coventry, England, for showing up with Mick Jagger-style haircuts. 1966: The Exploding Plastic Inevitable show, featuring the Velvet Underground and the Mothers of Invention, plays its first gig on the West Coast, at San Franciscos Fillmore Auditorium. 1966: Before his concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Bob Dylan welcomes the Beatles again in his dressing room; Paul, anxious to impress the singer, plays him an early, electronic version of a track that would later become Tomorrow Never Knows. Oh, I get it, you dont want to be cute anymore, Dylan laughs, and leaves the room. 1967: Columbia and RCA announce plans to raise the price of long-playing LP (33 rpm) records one dollar to a high of $4.98. 1968: The Iron Butterfly record their seventeen minute epic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” at Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, Long Island, New York. The west coast band performs the song as part of a soundcheck while waiting for their producer to arrive and are unaware they are being recorded. According to VH1 (in 09), the title track of the multi-platinum album is the 24th greatest Hard Rock song of all time. 1972: “Tumbling Dice” peaks at #7 in the U.S. The Rolling Stones track is from “Exile On Main Street. 1974: Lisa Marie Presley, then five, meets an 11-year-old Michael Jackson for the first time when Elvis brings her to the Jackson 5 show at the Sahara in Vegas. 1978: The Rolling Stones release “Miss You.” It’s on the “Some Girls” LP. 1980: Rock is dangerous work. During a performance taped for Italian TV David Lee Roth vaults off drummer Alex Van Halen’s drum riser and right into some low hanging lights. The Van Halen frontman suffers a fractured nose and multiple contusions. 1988: “Monsters of Rock” hits the road with Van Halen, Scorpions and Metallica. 1989: Celebrated anti-communist labor leader Lech Walesa presents Stevie Wonder with a Badge of Solidarity from his native Poland. 1989: For the first time since 1975, Chicago and the Beach Boys begin a joint headlining tour of the US, with Brian Wilson joining his old group on some of the dates. 1994:The Eagles launch the Hell Freezes Over tour in Burbank. The trek is the group’s first since parting ways in ’80. The tours title is a reference to a Don Henley quote regarding the prospects of an Eagles reunion. Apparently, Henley misspoke. With this tour, The Eagles become the first to charge over $100 per ticket for arena shows. 1999: Lionel Richie and wife Diane Alexander become the proud parents of their first child, Miles Brockman. 2003: Led Zeppelin’s definitive live CD “How The West Was Won” is released. It was recorded during the California portion of their 73 North American tour. 2004: The Bee Gees are made Commanders of the Order of the British Empire by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace; Maurices son Adam accepts on behalf of his father, whod just died six months earlier. 2006: Bruce Springsteen’s U.S. tour in support of his album We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions launches in Boston. The Boss takes along a 17-member backing band to do justice to the songs of the legendary Folk singer Pete Seeger. 2007: The Police play a special show for fan club members at General Motors Place in Vancouver, Canada, a day prior to the launch of their world tour (also in Vancouver). 2008: John Lennons estate backs a joint initiative between Ben & Jerrys and Peace One Day to promote the nonprofit organizations Peace Day event on September 21st. The partnership announcement in New York is highlighted by a re-creation of Lennon and Yoko Onos ‘69 Montreal bed-in event to promote the ice-cream companys Lennon-themed flavor –Imagine Whirled Peace.
