Today, in the history of Rock and Roll, November 17th: 1941: The Byrds`vocalist Gene Clark enters the world. 1963: Headmaster John Weightman of Surrey Grammar School in Guildford, England, bans the popular Beatle moptop haircuts, explaining that this ridiculous style brings out the worst in boys physically. It makes them look like morons. 1963: Backstage at the British ITV music program Thank Your Lucky Stars, the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards present Gene Pitney with one of their first songs, My Only Girl. Retitled That Girl Belongs To Yesterday, it would be a hit for Pitney on both sides of the ocean, the first Jagger/Richards composition to make the US charts, and the first UK hit for the pair. Later, the Stones themselves record the song, but their version is never released. 1970: Elton John performs a live concert for a New York radio station, WPLJ. The show is released as “11-17-70.” The best tracks are “Take Me To The Pilot” and “Burn Down The Mission” (hot piano work). 1973: Ike & Tina Turner’s rousing “Nutbush City Limits” misses the Top 20 (#22) in the U.S. but hits #4 in the U.K. The song is covered by Bob Seger. 1978: During Bob Dylans show at the San Diego Sports Arena, an audience member throws a silver Christian cross onstage, which the singer picks up and pockets. Perhaps coincidentally, Dylan enters his Christian period the next year. 1979: Jethro Tull bassist John Glasscock dies of a heart attack in London. He had a history of heart aliments. 1987: U2’s Bono pulls a fan from the audience to sing “People Get Ready” with him. Being that the concert is in L.A. the fan hands Bono a demo tape. 1990: While speeding without a helmet, David Crosby crashes his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Los Angeles, breaking his shoulder, left leg, and ankle. 1994: Bob Dylan begins taping his episode of MTVs Unplugged at New Yorks Sony Studios. 2000: ABC-TV airs the documentary The Beatles: Revolution. 2003: After collapsing on stage during a concert in London, Meat Loaf is rushed to a nearby hospital with what a publicist terms exhaustion due to a prolonged viral infection but what is actually an irregular heartbeat requiring emergency surgery. 2003: The Beatles release “Let It Be… Naked.” It is a remastering of the original 1969 album with Phil Spector’s production removed. Spector, hired to salvage the project, added strings to several tracks – much to Paul McCartney’s displeasure. 2005: Rome welcomes the world-premiere performance of Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters opera Ça Ira (There Is Hope). It sells out so a second show is added. 2006: Peter Gabriel (former Genesis frontman and solo performer) receives the annual Man of Peace trophy in Rome from the Gorbachev Foundation, an organization founded by former USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Gabriel is recognized for his his human-rights activism and promotion of peace. The ceremony marks the beginning of an international gathering attended by Nobel Peace Prize winners. 2006: U2s Bono and the Edge join Pearl Jam onstage for a cover of Neil Youngs Rockin In The Free World at the Make Poverty History concert in Melbourne, Australia. About 14,000 people attend the event, timed to coincide with the G-20 summit in that fair city. The politicians have to do what you tell them to do, Bono tells the crowd. Sure they do. 2009: Them Crooked Vultures (Led Zeppelins John Paul Jones, Foo Fighters Dave Grohl and Queens Of The Stone Age founder Josh Homme) release their self-titled debut album. With that, the band launches a tour in support of the album at the Wiltern Theater in L.A. 2009: For a group with more live albums than most people can count, Rush goes to the well again for “Working Men.” The compilation features tracks from ‘08’s “Snakes & Arrows Live,” ‘05’s “R30” and ‘03’s “Rush In Rio” but the songs are from various periods in the band’s lengthy career. 2011: Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is one five celebrities transformed into one-of-a-kind Cabbage Patch Kids auctioned on Ebay to benefit the Childrens Action Network (CAN), a national adoption awareness organization. Tylers Cabbage Patch doll comes with its own microphone stand. Figures.
