Today is Day 3 of my 7 days of Gratitude: Today I am thankful for my wife Deborah, she has put up with me for over 40 years and has been my trusted partner, loving wife and a dedicated mother to our children. Story time: As I mentioned before, my mother knew that I was not in a good place when I returned from Vietnam, her counsel was for me to get married and I followed her lead. When I met Deborah, she was 16 years old, she had a 9 month old baby boy and although she didn’t know it, she was pregnant with another. Deborah was in a terrible place, forsaken by friends and family as a result of her pregnancy and obsessed with the fear that as a result she would burn in hell for eternity. To me, as a returning combat veteran, she seemed weak and desperate but with a very good heart. As I got to know her, I was instantly drawn to her sweet innocence and loving ways. She drew me in with an unconditional love that I so desperately needed at that time. For her, I seemed to be the rock she needed to survive in a world that seemed to have turned completely against her. Thus began the magic mix that has sustained our life together for over forty years., she gave me the unconditional love I needed to regain my humanity following a year of war and I in turn provided her with the strength and direction to face an unforgiving world. We clung to each other and have never let go.
