Today is International Volunteers Day so we thought it a good opportunity to give a shout out to the many volunteers that make the Stirling Farmers Market possible… The Market is run solely by volunteers, mostly from the Rotary Club of Karrinyup (District 9455) – either members or participants of our Youth Programmes (like current and past Rotary Youth Exchange students, or recipients of youth scholarships). Our volunteer Market Manager and Administrator work all week round, sourcing and liaising with our stallholders, dealing with the Stirling City Council (who allow us to hold the market in their carpark), arranging facilities (like toilets) for the weekend, answering queries from customers and plotting the layout of each weekly market. Our busker and community stall managers organise the roster for our buskers and for the community groups that avail themselves of our free weekly community stall. A volunteer spends time each Saturday marking out the stalls for the following day (and prays it doesn’t rain between then and Sunday morning), a member of our transport crew rises early on a Sunday morning to collect the trailer of equipment and get it to the market by 6.30am, where he is met by a team of around 5 volunteers who set up the stalls for the Market Managers, Buskers, Community stall etc and arrange, clean and set up the tables and chairs for our customers to use. During the morning volunteers man the admin tent and address any issues raised or problems encountered. They work with our stallholders and of course run our “Hamper Raffle”. On busy days they direct parking. At the end of the day they then work tirelessly to pack up the venue and leave it clean for the City of Stirling (including cleaning the carpark if any ‘spills’ occur) before the transport volunteer takes off with the trailer for another week. Even our facebook page is administered by volunteers. Like all volunteers, we do it because we love it – but it doesnt hurt to acknowledge the effort once in a while so, on International Volunteers Day – THANKYOU STIRLING FARMERS MARKET VOLUNTEERS! Our volunteers aren’t paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!
