Today is International Workers’ Day. 1st of May is celebrated in Denmark – and in a lot of other countries around the world. On 1st May 1890, the first celebrations were held in Denmark. It took place in Fælledparken in Copenhagen because at that time it was forbidden to demonstrate in the streets. Since this day Fælledparken has been linked to the 1st of May and celebrations and speeches are held across the country in parks and gardens. Though since 1890 the celebrations have changed and today mostly politicians and the unions are engaged in the official celebrations, including a lot of young Danes, who see it as an opportunity to drink beers with friends.
