Today is National Tequila Day!! 1. Unlike most beers and liquors, Tequila is aged on the plant and not in the cask. Tequila is derived from the blue agave plant which takes about 8 years to mature. A fully grown blue agave heart resembles a pineapple but can weigh more than 100 pounds. 2. Tequila is only made in Mexico. Like champagne, true tequila can only come from certain parts of the world. 3. Tequila must contain 51% blue agave. Tequila is highly regulated in Mexico but there are still several varieties and classes. A tequila that is not made with 100% tequila is called a “mixto.” 4. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most expensive bottle of tequila ever sold was a Platinum & White Gold Tequila bottle was sold by Tequila Ley. The bottle was sold for $225,000 to a private collector in 2006. 5. The world’s largest margarita contained more than 8,500 gallons. And yes, it was achieved by the Margaritaville in Las Vegas.
