Today is Saturday, September 7, 2013 Today in Texas History 1863 - Union forces arrived at Sabine Pass, Texas. The next day their attack was thwarted by a small Confederate force. 1866 - In Brenham, federal soldiers under Bvt. Major George W. Smith set fire and looted several stores. The fire was set after three soldiers were shot during a dance. 1901 - The Itasca Cotton Manufacturing Company processed its first 100 bales of cotton. 1914 - The city of Houston celebrated the deepening of the Houston Ship Channel to twenty-five feet. 1936 - Charles Hardin Holley, later known as Buddy Holly, was born in Lubbock, TX. His name was misspelled on his first record contract and he decided to leave it that way. 1956 - Contruction began on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. 1972 - The Texas Folklife Festival kicked off in San Antonio to preserve the ethnic traditions of the Lone Star State.
