Today is Thanksgiving, and happens to be my birthday also. Its not the joyful day it should be for my my family, as we have had a death in the family this week. It was a sudden and unforeseen illness, and for the first time in my life, made me seriously doubt my faith in God. Ive tried to look for things to still be grateful for, and there are many, but its difficult. I took off work and was alone at my house, unable to think of anything beyond how unfair this loss was, when I got a call for a search deployment. I decided to go, and Im glad I did. Being with some of my team and using my K9, Blade, to search two burned buildings-one burned out, and one completely collapsed, for possible victims of the fire helped to turn my thoughts away from myself and my own grief. Sometimes our closest family includes the people we pick, and my team mates are definitely part of my family. So my dogs, who never let me mourn alone.Those of us who serve, or have served, in any of the emergency response services know that people lose their loved ones every day. You just never know when or how it might happen. Dont take your friends and family for granted. Tell them today how much you appreciate them. Be glad for the things you have, and stop fretting over the little things. In the end, its the people you love, and who love you, that count. Everything else is just the little things.
