Today is Veterans Day - a day in which we all take a moment to recognize the service and sacrifices that members of our military have provided to our country. Since 2001, more than two million U.S. troops have been deployed and are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan facing physical and emotional challenges requiring more than medical treatment to resolve. The arts can play an important role in assisting service members and veterans coping with post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, and major depression by helping them express themselves and share their experiences. Working through a National Steering Committee comprised of federal agency, military, nonprofit and private sector partners, Americans for the Arts launched the National Initiative for Arts and Health in the Military (NIAHM). This initiative represents the first time the military has come together with a coalition of civilian public and private sector agencies to ensure quality access to the arts for the health and well-being of service members, veterans and their families in communities across the country.
