Today is World Mental Health Day. There have been huge advances in the recognition, treatment and reducing the stigma of mental disorders. However as more and more people are getting diagnosed, as people continue to wait for help or receive inadequate care and support and as the general public still have many misconceptions and stereotypes about mental health, we must remember that we still have so much more to do. If anyone out there is suffering from mental health issues, keep fighting. As someone who has experienced mental health problems, I know recovery can seem like it will never come but it is achievable. If you know someone who is experiencing mental health problems, help and support them: you have no idea how much that can mean to someone. Finally if neither you or anyone you know is suffering, stay vigilant. If someone you know seems down or starts acting strangely, talk to them about it. Mental health issues can come quickly and hit hard. The quicker it gets addressed the less likely it is to get a hold of someone. We may never completely eradicate mental health issues, but we can damn sure kick their ass.
