Today is a very special day for hardcore lifelong baseball fans. Today marks the 100th anniversary of the mighty Babe Ruth’s first baseball game as a major league player. The Babe holds many records, some of which we are very familiar with – even non-baseball aficionados – and some not so much. And there are a lot of myths and legends that also accompany his name (such as, that of the Babe Ruth candy bar). So instead of trying to give you a biography of Babe Ruth’s life; I have listed 100 facts, stats, myth “debunktions”, etc. – or whatever it is you want to call them – about the man and his game. I just love it when my today-in-history-style blog for History Friday coincides with a cool event! The article I referred to for today’s post was actually written last year with the title “99 Cool Facts About Babe Ruth”, celebrating 99 years with 99 tidbits of information. Since I have had to alter the title for obvious reasons, I have concluded this piece with an additional assertion of my own – bringing the total to its appropriate 100. “Ruth was the quintessential man of our times. Truly, his greatness as an athlete, and as a loved personality, comes about in defiance of any logic. What we do know is Ruth was supposed to be special, because we simply needed this man for all he represented. What great man could say just the few words, ‘How ya doin’ kid’, and have you treasure the acknowledgment for the rest of your days?” ~ Marshall Fogel How do you feel about America’s favorite pastime and one of the men that helped make it so?
